This is an introduction to the theoretical study of womens lives as they vary within a culture and across cultures. Differences according to sex, gender, race, class, ethnicity and age will be examined. Through a feminist lens, this course examines how gender intersects with ethnicity, class, race and sexuality, and age. A primary focus of the course is on the social construction of gender over the life course by looking at women in both the United States and women in other cultures. Womens lives within economic, political, and social structures will be examined. An overview of issues affecting womens lives, including sexuality, reproduction, work, family, health, poverty and violence will be provided.
