GEIS 201 - Mapping and Cartography

This course explores the principles and practices of effective map design and cartographic visualization within Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Students will develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in creating compelling, informative, and aesthetically pleasing maps using industry-standard GIS software in a lab setting. The course covers fundamental cartographic concepts and their application in digital environments, including principles of map design and visual hierarchy, symbolization and color theory in cartography, typography and labeling techniques, projections and coordinate systems, scale and generalization in digital mapping, thematic mapping techniques (choropleth, proportional symbol, dot density, etc.), interactive and web-based mapping, and 3D visualization and terrain representation. Students will also explore the creation and sharing of web maps, learning how to design interactive, dynamic maps in a modern, accessible format. Ultimately, students will learn to critically analyze maps, make informed design decisions, and effectively communicate spatial information through various mapping techniques.
